Power BI Embedded Copilot: Chat with Your Data + Embedded Pane

power bi embedded copilot

In June 2025, Microsoft introduced two game-changing AI experiences in Power BI:

  1. Chat with Your Data – a full‑screen, cross‑item Copilot interface.
  2. Copilot pane inside embedded reports, enabling chat-driven insights right within external portals and websites.

This blog explores both experiences—their architecture, capabilities, requirements, and real-world impact—while guiding you through enabling and embedding Copilot for users both inside and outside your organization.

1. Chat with Your Data – Full‑Screen Copilot Experience

What is it?

“Chat with Your Data” is Microsoft’s new full‑screen Copilot interface in the Power BI/Fabric service. Launched in preview mid‑May 2025 and fully rolled out in early June 2025, it provides a conversational point of entry into your entire analytics ecosystem. Users can pose natural language queries like:

  • “Show me trends in product revenue across Q1–Q2.”
  • “List reports about customer churn.”
  • “Summarize what’s driving bike sales in Washington state.”

The AI can locate relevant reports, semantic models, or Fabric data agents that the user has access to, then generate visualizations or narrative summaries to answer questions (Power BI, Power BI).

Core Features

According to Microsoft Learn, the standalone experience supports:

  • Content discovery: It searches across workspaces, reports, semantic models, and data agents.
  • Summarization: Provides insight into entire reports, or specific slices.
  • Natural‑language Q&A: Users can ask follow‑up questions, like “compare last month to three months ago.”
  • Instant visuals: Automatically generates charts and tables to illustrate answers (Power BI, Microsoft Learn).

Compared to the traditional in-report Copilot pane—which confines you to the current report—the standalone it aggregates insights from across your entire tenant.

Activation & Requirements

To enable this experience:

  1. Admins must toggle on:
  • Users can use Copilot and other features powered by Azure OpenAI, and
  • Users can access a standalone, cross-item Power BI Copilot experience (preview) (Microsoft Learn).
  1. Use a Premium Power BI (P1+) or Fabric (F2+) capacity.
  2. Be aware of regional availability—at launch, the standalone Copilot wasn’t supported in several geographies such as India West, Korea South, and UAE (Microsoft Learn).

Once configured, users will see a Copilot icon in the left navigation bar; clicking it launches the full-screen chat interface.

Why it’s transformational

  • Discovery at scale: No more hunting through workspaces – you simply ask for the dataset or report.
  • Speed to insights: Automatic summaries and visuals save business users time and reduce report clutter.
  • Smart self-service: Empowers non‑technical users to engage with enterprise data without being Power BI experts.

 2. Copilot Pane in Embedded Reports

What’s new?

Alongside full-screen Copilot, Microsoft has enabled a Copilot pane within securely embedded reports, bringing conversational analytics directly to your external portals and websites (Power BI, Power BI).

Experience Overview

  • Tucked into the right-hand pane of embedded reports, it operates in real-time alongside visuals.
  • Mirrors the narrative Q&A capabilities of in-report Copilot—users can request summaries, ask follow-ups, or explore insights.
  • Available only in secure embed scenarios, where users authenticate (Power BI Pro/PPU license or view via Premium/F capacity) (Power BI).

This isn’t supported under the App‑Owns‑Data (service principal) embed model via Power BI Embedded—those must use Azure A SKUs and do not support Copilot in this scenario (Microsoft Fabric Community).

Enabling the Copilot Pane

  1. Ensure Copilot is enabled for your tenant and workspace capacity.
  2. Open the report in Power BI Service.
  3. Select File → Embed → Website or portal.
  4. In the secure embed dialog, check “Enable Copilot” (Power BI, Microsoft Learn).
  5. Paste the generated iframe/URL into your portal.

Once live, users can sign in and initiate chat conversations right within the embedded context.

Supported Scenarios

  • User‑Owns‑Data Embed: Ideal for internal intranet tools and secure portals where users already have Power BI access and can authenticate.
  • Org Apps: Also available in “Org App” embedding for wider internal distribution (Power BI, Microsoft Fabric Community, Microsoft Learn).

Limitations

  • Not supported in App‑Owns‑Data/A SKU embedded scenarios for unauthenticated external users (Microsoft Fabric Community).
  • Narratives, charts, and pane are available only in secure, authenticated contexts.
  • Report authors must embed through secure mechanisms that enforce Power BI RLS and licensing.

3. Technical & Governance Considerations

Capacity & Licensing

Feature Capacity SKU Tenant Setting
Full‑Screen Copilot Premium P1+ or Fabric F2+ Enable Copilot + standalone experience
Copilot Pane in Embed Same as above Tenant Copilot enabled + “Enable Copilot” in embed dialog

Ensure your workspaces are on the right capacity and your admin toggles necessary settings (Power BI, Microsoft Learn, Microsoft Learn, Microsoft Learn).

Authentication Models

  • Secure Embed/User‑Owns‑Data: Users sign in to Power BI. Copilot pane works flawlessly.
  • App‑Owns‑Data (A SKUs): Intended for unauthenticated users or service principals—Copilot unavailable (Reddit).

Opt for secure embedding when conversational analytics is essential to your portal.

Data and Privacy

It leverages Azure OpenAI to process data. Organizations outside supported regions may require a tenant-level toggle to permit cross‑region processing (Microsoft Learn). Check any compliance implications before enabling.

Model Behavior and Limits

  • Latency spikes may occur while connecting to Premium/F capacities.
  • Quality and contextual awareness improve weekly with model updates from Microsoft .
  • For non-English prompts, results may still arrive, but full multilingual support isn’t official yet.

4. Real-World Use Cases

For End Users & Analysts

  • Unified discovery: Search across ecosystems— “Find bike sales reports in Q4 2024.”
  • Rapid insight: Get bullet-point narratives like, “Top 3 drivers of revenue increase: Region A, Product B, Channel C.”
  • Conversational engagement: Ask follow-ups like “Show me the chart for Region A” and see visuals instantly.

Via Embedded Portals

  • Enterprise intranets: Embed secure reports with Copilot for consistent data exploration across teams.
  • Customer portals: Authenticated partners or clients can chat with their data without extra training.
  • Org app distribution: Provide a conversational layer in familiar branded internal apps (Power BI, Power BI).

For Developers & BI Leads

  • Reusable deployment: The same workspace powers both full-screen and embed experiences.
  • Rapid enablement: No coding required; just toggle Copilot and embed with a checkbox. Integration is low friction.
  • Capacity planning: Allocate Premium/F SKUs not just for performance, but to unleash AI conversational capabilities.
